Goodness
A probiotic twist on traditional spiced buttermilk. Milk kefir contains a far wider range of live bacteria and yeasts than regular curd, which supports gut-microbiome diversity and digestion. Fermentation pre-digests much of the lactose. It provides good-quality dairy protein, calcium and vitamin B12 (important for vegetarians). Ginger, mint, coriander and green chilli make it a cooling, digestive summer drink that works well after meals.

Who should avoid
• Cow's-milk protein allergy (CMPA): contains milk and milk kefir.
• Vegans: contains milk and milk kefir.
• Strict Jain diet: contains root vegetables (fresh ginger) and fermented (overnight-cultured) ingredients. A Jain version can use dry ginger/turmeric powder (sonth/haldi).
• Infants under 12 months: salted product; infant kidneys cannot handle added salt.
• Severely immunocompromised (chemotherapy, organ transplant, advanced HIV, central-line patients, very sick premature infants): live-culture probiotic drink, so take only with doctor approval.
• Strict alcohol-avoiders: fermented drinks carry trace alcohol (~0.1-1%), relevant for religious abstinence, recovery from alcohol dependence, and those on metronidazole or disulfiram.
• Heart failure, advanced kidney disease or doctor-prescribed strict salt restriction: ~830 mg sodium per 200 ml portion.
Consume less / with caution
• High blood pressure / sodium-restricted diets: moderate sodium (415 mg/100 ml; ~830 mg per serve).
• Chronic kidney disease (stage 3+): ~276 mg potassium & ~140 mg phosphorus per serve. Fit within renal diet allowance.
• Acid reflux (GERD), gastritis, piles/fissures: contains ginger, chilli, mint (relaxes the oesophageal valve) and fermented acidity, which can aggravate symptoms.
• IBS / bloating-prone people: milk/curd (lactose) may trigger gas or loose stools; start with half a serve.
• Lactose intolerance: fermentation lowers lactose and most people tolerate kefir/curd well, but test a small serving first.
• Histamine intolerance and people on MAO-inhibitor antidepressants: fermented foods contain histamine/tyramine.
• Pregnancy: fine if made from pasteurised milk/juice; limit to one glass a day because of trace alcohol.
